BACKSTORY
Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore, after marriage and becoming human, ultimately fell pregnant with a little girl. Upon her birth, they named her Isobel Caroline Salvatore, after Elena's birth mother, Isobel, and her best friend, Caroline. Isobel, like her parents, was born human, with no supernatural abilities of any sort.
Isobel grew up like any normal child, and her mother and father tried to protect her from knowing about the history of Mystic Falls. They tried to protect her from knowing about vampirism and supernaturals as a whole, because they didn't want her to grow up having the same worries as they both did.
So, as her parents told her, Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore were both humans attending Mystic Falls when they met, and after Elena and Stefan broke up, she and Damon made it official and it was a 'typical' high school romance. After high school, Elena went to college and medical school. She became a doctor and married Damon.
Something was always off about that story, however. Isobel always had her questions and suspicions and when she asked, would be faced with the answers of 'Not until you're older,' and 'I'm busy, Isobel, ask me later.' The young girl just wanted the truth. She wanted to know about her family's childhood and what occurred. She wanted it to be like other kids' parents who would make a joke like, 'When I was younger, we did this . . .' while they were getting ice cream. Instead, when the Salvatore family got ice cream, they didn't talk about the what used to be. They discussed the now, as if hiding something they weren't ready to share with her.
It wasn't until high school that she'd begun to hear the rumors about Mystic Falls and about her family. Rumors about Aunt Caroline and Aunt Bonnie that Isobel would deny and refuse to listen to for several months. It appeared that everyone in Mystic Falls High School had something to say about the founding families and supernatural creatures. Yeah, right. Like those were real.
After the rumors began multiplying, and around two years had gone by, Isobel decided that she couldn't let things just slide by, and she had to investigate these rumors. All rumors had to start somewhere, and she was hoping it was from a storybook. Unfortunately, her hopes were wrong. She'd found several files in her mother's office that were misleading and full of plot holes. They didn't make sense, and nothing was adding up. In her father's office, in which she was NEVER supposed to go in, held things that she shouldn't have ever seen. Wooden weapons, a crossbow, syringes with a strange liquid inside of it labeled 'vervain.' What the hell was that about? On the wall, in the inside of the closet in the office was a map detailing locations of people. It looked like a serial killer's wall, and she was sure that her dad wasn't a serial killer, right?
One night, a few weeks later, Isobel decided she needed to follow her father, to try and find out what he was doing so late at night he couldn't tell her about. She snuck out and into her car, tailing her father for miles until she lost him somewhere past Wickery Bridge.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck when she was driving across the infamous bridge, because the roads were wet, and the white truck on the other side of the road was holding a drunk driver. Isobel, driving careful per her instruction, was just starting on the bridge when the white pick up truck drifted onto her side of the road. Isobel slammed her breaks, though it did no good. He was heading straight towards her. At the last second, he tried to swerve, though he still hit her head on, causing her car to spin and flip several times on the wet asphalt. Glass shards from the windows came flying in, and all Isobel remembers is the motion of the car crash and the lights of the emergency responders pulling up. Isobel was in an out of consciousness and losing a lot of blood.
At the hospital, it was discovered that she had several fractures in her skull, brain bleeding, broken bones, a punctured lung, glass shards lodged in her skin in multiple places, and several minor cuts and bruises in various parts of the body. Isobel was rushed into emergency surgery, and unfortunately for Elena, she was on call that night, and watched as they wheeled her daughter in on a stretcher. Elena called her husband, frantic, and in shambles.
While in surgery, it was projected that Isobel would never make it out alive. She had suffered so many injuries that it would be nearly impossible to keep her frail body alive and kicking.
Upon hearing such news from several coworkers, Elena had to make a tough decision. You see, there were still vials of Damon Salvatore's blood locked in a refrigerator hidden in the hospital's basement. Those vials originated from when Meredith Fell worked at the hospital and used them to save people. Elena only had minutes to make a decision. Let her daughter die at seventeen years old, or use her husband's old vampire blood to try and save her.
Ultimately, Elena chose to try to save Isobel's life, and fed Isobel the vampire blood through a blood transfusion. Like magic, the vampire blood healed her minimal wounds, but there was one wound it didn't heal. Her brain hemorrhaging. Isobel's artery inside her skull had burst, and it wasn't repairing fast enough with the vampire blood. She did, unfortunately pass away at 11:06 PM. on August 14th, on the bed of an O.R. table, with her mother by her side.
Everyone in the room was heartbroken for Elena, though she knew that her daughter would come back to life, only this time as an undead vampire. A creature she'd fought so hard to keep her daughter from becoming. Damon had arrived at the hospital while she was in the operating room, and was shortly joined by Elena who explained to him the horrors that had just occurred. Damon, now human, was hunting the very creatures she had now became. He'd been trying to protect her the entire time, but there was no longer anything he could do. His daughter, sweet little Isobel Salvatore, had been succumbed to the life he too had been forced into.
Elena and Damon spent the time she was dead making up stories to everyone who was in the OR, to get them to believe that she'd been saved and was doing fine. Elena and Damon had decided that in order to keep her story a secret, Isobel would have to compel the nurses and doctors alike the same story about her coming back to life. The story would become: she coded, and thankfully was brought back to life by extraordinary caregivers who used a defibrillator to send electrical waves back to her heart to make it beat again.
When Isobel's eyes opened in a recovery room, she was met with a throat burning hunger, and a sensitivity to light. Her mother and father waited patiently for her to wake, blood bags ready.
They explained to her the trials and tribulations of her bloodline, and the real story of Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore. They told her everything that night, and gave Isobel the decision of life or death. Isobel chose to feed that night and continue to survive. Isobel was taught to compel, having to compel all of the doctors and nurses in the hospital about her 'story.' Damon and Elena taught her about vampirism and managed to get her a daylight ring so she could walk in the sun.
Elena and Damon knew that Mystic Falls High School wouldn't be safe for her, so they made the decision to transfer her to the Salvatore Boarding School for her safety in the start of her junior year. All that was released to the media was that Isobel had been in an accident, and had survived. No one knew anything else.
